What you need to know about camping in winter

Would you like to take your motorhome on the road in winter? Great idea! Adria motorhomes are designed for year-round use. However, it's essential to know how to handle different situations. The key to being comfortable is having the courage to hit the road, and the more you know, the better.
Where can you park?
If you plan to use your motorhome for accommodation when attending sporting events or similar activities, there are often designated parking areas, but usually without electricity.
Many campsites remain open during the winter. If you plan to stay at a campsite before an event, it is advisable to book early.
Several operators also offer parking in their designated spaces for a nominal fee. The specific regulations at each site need to be clarified individually.
You can also find parking spaces on various apps, but you should check the suitability of specific spaces for winter parking. We wrote about the Park4nightapp in one of our blog articles.
What if we get stuck?
Winter tyres are an absolute must for safe driving during the winter season . We also recommend carrying a shovel and a bucket of coarse sand/gravel for better traction in less accessible areas. Snow chains can be a handy tool, but they are not designed for long distances and can damage the motorhome if they break.
What if the entire motorhome is covered in snow and ice?
It is essential to clear any snow before setting off. You are responsible for ensuring that snow falling from the motorhome does not cause damage to other drivers.
Gas
Winter camping requires careful management of propane and reliable winter tires. Automatic systems such as DuoControl or a crash sensor also increase safety. In cold conditions, steel cylinders and studded winter tyres are used. Other safety measures such as snow chains and LED light bars improve traction and visibility and promote a sense of safety on the road.
In the winter, when it gets really cold, you can expect great gas mileage. Handling gas should be practical. In cold weather, you want to make changing gas easier. You can install the DuoControl system, which automatically switches gas cylinders; for added safety, you can also equip it with an EisEx regulator heater.
The Duo-Matic gas system with impact sensor and automatic switching between two cylinders shows you when the main cylinder is empty and the system switches to the reserve cylinder. This way you avoid changing gas cylinders in the middle of the night. The impact sensor cuts off the gas supply in the event of a collision or impact, and features an EisEx system that prevents the regulator from freezing in winter.
For everyone's safety, it is important to monitor the condition of gas hoses for burst or expired gas lines. Everything can be managed via the Alde heating control panel or a separate panel can be installed for this purpose.
Tyres
Studded winter tyres are a must if you like to drive on less frequented roads, as you are assured of traction and proper braking capabilities. When you're travelling really far north, such as Scandinavia, temperatures of around -20 to -25 degrees are not unusual. In such conditions, it is very important that the rubber compound of the tyres maintains its grip and the tread can perform well on snow and ice.
For the uncle seva story you can take a box of coarse crushed gravel and of course snow chains, shovel and starter cables.
Lighting
A properly lit road in front of the motorhome is a definite must, especially in winter when it gets dark earlier. This is especially important for early detection of people and animals or other obstacles on or near the road. To increase safety on the road, you can equip your motorhome with an LED bar.
In the next article, we'll also look at insulating blankets for the windshield, tailgate, interior mats, heating mats and a few other things that will make your motorhome extra warm and cozy. So don't forget to follow us.
