A caravan in city service: Havířov has a new mobile police station

A caravan does not have to be used only for holidays. In Havířov it has taken on a practical public role: it serves as a mobile municipal police station and a contact point for local residents.

Facilities right where they are needed

According to the report, the municipal police will move the station to locations where public-order problems or residents’ complaints occur repeatedly. It can remain in one place for around two weeks, so this is not a daily relocation but targeted support for a particular part of the city.

During designated office hours, an officer will be present inside for residents to approach directly. At other times, the patrol can work in the surrounding area while the station’s equipment continues monitoring the public space.

Five cameras and independent backup power

The caravan has been adapted for field work. Four fixed cameras monitor its surroundings and a fifth sits on a hydraulic mast. Video is available both inside the station and at the central control room. The system can detect the movement of people and vehicles as well as larger groups.

The new facility replaces a mobile station that had been used since 2009. According to the municipal police management, the new trailer and its equipment cost approximately CZK 840,000, while the original solution cost more than CZK 1.3 million.

A caravan as a purpose-built mobile workplace

The Havířov story shows a less familiar side of caravans. With a self-contained interior, mobility and connections for the required technology, a specially adapted trailer can also serve as an office, consultation point or operational base. In this case, it brings the municipal police closer to residents exactly where its presence is needed.
