The 10 most common mistakes when travelling with caravans and motorhomes

Even a master carpenter makes mistakes, even the most experienced motorhome drivers sometimes forget to close the awning or close the locker. Let's take a look at the most common mistakes you can make when driving an RV.

1. Driving too far in a short time

A lot of travelers try to get as much done in as little time as possible. However, nothing brings more stress during an RV trip than a fast pace.

At some point, this fast travel pace will catch up with you. After all, when you're driving for, say, six hours every day, there's not much time for fun or thorough rest. Slow down. Plan a less demanding route. Take shorter trips. Enjoy your motorhome!

2. You bought a motorhome that doesn't suit you

If you take the plunge and buy the first motorhome you come across, chances are it won't suit you. There are many things to consider carefully before you buy - one of our articles describes what to look for before buying a recreational vehicle. We highly recommend renting a motorhome before you buy.

Did you know that in our Mango Drive rental service, the cost of the rental vehicle will be deducted from the total price of the vehicle purchased at Adria branches?

3. Awnings problems

Who doesn't love an awning on a motorhome - it provides shade, protection from the rain and a nice place to sit outside. However, it is important to keep an eye on it, as it only takes a few seconds of strong winds and heavy rain for the awning to break. At the first sign of bad weather, you should roll up the awning. Leaving the awning up when you go on a trip is not a good idea either, as you may be unpleasantly surprised when you return.

4. Forgetting to disconnect the cables before the trip

Have you ever seen a motorhome driving down the road dragging an electrical cable or a sewer hose behind it? Funny thought when you're not in that situation. However, it happens more often than you might think. There are a lot of things to remember when packing up and leaving the campsite. One of the most important things is to disconnect the recreational vehicle from all utilities.

5. You are in the campground for bad neighbors

Campgrounds are like small communities. Therefore, be considerate of others. Don't play loud music, clean up after your dog, and don't leave a mess at your campsite when you leave .

6. Pack too much

A spacious motorhome tempts you to cram as much stuff in as possible. But before packing , think about whether you 'll realistically need everything you're packing with you. Even motorhomes have weight limits. Plus, who wants to put more stuff than they need in an already small space. Before you start mindlessly stuffing your storage space with ghosts, jars, books, all sorts of garden furniture or sports equipment, consider what you'll actually use on your trip.

7. Forget to check everything before you leave

You should always check your motorhome before you take it anywhere. A thorough check will save you a lot of potential problems and money. If you don't know how to check your car thoroughly, we recommend reading our article that covers what you should check before you go.

8. Not defrosting the freezer

Especially on long journeys, a freezer is invaluable. It's even more of a surprise when you find an ice pantry instead of a place to store all those goodies. Plus, if the freezer is too frozen, it uses up to 30% more energy.

9. You have no experience driving a motorhome

RVs are not cars. They are tall, long and heavy. It is important that you learn how to drive a motorhome properly. There are certain techniques, such as slowing down in high winds, learning how to turn, and proper reversing, that will probably take you some time to master. Don't rush it. Take your RV to a large empty parking lot and practice, practice, practice. You can take a motorhome driving course or ask other drivers for hints and tips.
