Safety first — what to check before the new season

What to check before your first drive after the winter break: tyres, water, battery, fuel, engine, lights and minor items such as smoke alarms and vehicle registration.

Safety first — what to check before the new season

Before you start — ventilate thoroughly 🌬

Before checking the interior of the motorhome, ventilate the caravan thoroughly for one dayAfter several months of rest, especially older vehicles may feel damp and musty. Check soft furniture and seals for any winter damage.

🚙Tires

Just like with a car — check if they are bulging, cracked, or worn out. Inflate to the pressure recommended by the manufacturer if needed. If you changed winter tires for summer ones, check for wear.

After mounting the tires check that the wheel bolts are properly tightened.

💧Water system + tanks

Fill the tank with water and let it run throughto detect leaks. Replace damaged pipes / leaking tank before repeating.

Tank sterilization: fill with sterilizing solution and let act for up to 12 hours. Then rinse with clean water and replace the filter.

🔋Battery

First clean the wires and terminals with contact cleaner. Then connect the battery according to the manufacturer's instructions. After reconnecting, check functionality — turn on interior lights and the water pump.

🔥Gas (LP)

Check tanks, connections, valve, and combustion method. If something doesn't work, have the system checked by a professional.

Every year, perform a leak and pressure test of the gas. For refillable bottles, check dates — after expiration, they must be re-certified.

🚗Engine — fluids

Start by checking the level of all fluids. If you don't know which fluid the vehicle uses, check the manual or contact the dealer.

Fluids to check
  • Engine coolant
  • Engine oil
  • Windshield washers
  • Brake fluid

Before starting, check oil level and exhaust area. If everything is fine, try starting it. Watch if the gauges show accurate readings.

💡Lights

Before connecting the caravan to the vehicle, check the plug — cracks in the cover, broken or corroded pins. After connecting, verify that the individual lights are working. Check marker lights and lenses.
