A journey along Norway’s north-west coast

This iconic mountain pass changes depending on the season. Winter is marked by closed roads and driving in queues, while summer reveals its rugged beauty. When you climb above the tree line, the lush forests of eastern Norway give way to barren mountains adorned only with moss and heather.

Yet this seemingly desolate landscape is teeming with life — sheep graze freely here, and occasionally a herd of reindeer will liven up your journey. On the descent, you will come across picturesque villages Lærdal and Sogndalthat lie where fjords embrace the mountains.

On the E39 road, you will reach the Stryn region, where you will find glaciers and the famous turquoise glacial lakes. In the very heart of the town, a range of shops and cozy cafés stretches along the fjord. For families with children, a paradise is Oldevatn Camp —the gateway to Briksdalsbreen Glacier.

In the summer months, the glacier melts and enriches the water with minerals, giving Lake Oldevatn unique turquoise shades. For the adventurous: Skåla Peak (1,848 m above sea level), Via Ferrata Loenor by the Loen Skylift to the mountain Hoven.

No trip would be complete without visiting the beautiful Ålesund. Thanks to its beautiful surroundings and Art Nouveau architecture, it has appeared several times in National Geographicrankings. In 1904, the city was devastated by a fire — in the following years, it was rebuilt and gained its iconic appearance.

Climb 418 steps to Aksla viewpoint and you will get a stunning panorama. A big bonus for caravan travelers: Right in the center, there is parking available for caravans and motorhomes.

From Ålesund, the most beautiful route takes you across Strandafjellet to Hellesylt and by ferry across the fjord. When you see the length of the fjord from the water, you will understand why it is Geiranger listed as a World Heritage site UNESCO. On the way, you will see several farms on the slopes where locals had to use rope ladderswhen the tax collector came — and children had to be tied with a rope to a pole while playing so they would not fall off the cliff.

In early summer you will see Seven Sisters waterfall. The village of Geiranger lies at the end of the fjord — it has only 250 permanent residents. Season from May to early September.

Between Geiranger and Åndalsnes, you pass through Valldalen valley, known as strawberry valley. If you watch HBO's Succession (season 4), you might recognize the landscape. For families: Valldalen Activity Park — climbing courses, ziplines.

Soon you will reach the top of Trollstigen — a steep road with eleven sharp curves. Opened in 1936. At the top, there are several viewpoints with a bird's eye view of Isterdalen.

Åndalsnes offers the perfect combination of calm and jagged peaks. For train lovers Rauma Railway It leads through picturesque landscapes — waterfalls and mountains. Don't miss the hike to Romsdalseggen — challenging but beautiful ridge experience with a view of the Troll wall, the tallest vertical rock face in Europe.

From Åndalsnes take the E6 road via Dombås and Gudbrandsdalen back towards Oslo and Sweden. If you have more time, we recommend taking a ferry via Romsdalsfjorden and the iconic Atlantic Ocean Route between Molde and Kristiansund.
