On the road with a motorhome and a canine companion
Traveling with a dog in a caravan or motorhome is not a problem — as long as you prepare well.
Do you leave your dog companion at home during vacation? For many owners, that is out of the question. A dog is part of the family — and on vacation, the owner finally has time for long walks and playing. What should you pay attention to before traveling?
🌍Where to go?
Considering the dog: it should tolerate the climate, meet entry requirements, it must be allowed to transport the pet in the caravan in the country, and there should be no quarantine regulations.
When choosing a campsite, ask:
Better than "dogs allowed" is "dogs welcome" — some campsites have dog showers, meadows, playgrounds, or "dog zones".
Check the campsite rules for pets — including fees for the dog.
Important that the dog has shelter from the sun.
Check in advance if dogs are allowed, on the entire beach or only in certain sections.
📋Entry regulations
EU pet passport + vaccination
- Valid EU pet passport for pets in breeding with registered vaccination records
- Rabies vaccination — mandatory, at least 21 days before departure (for the first vaccination)
- The dog must be microchipped even when traveling in the EU
- Treatment against tapeworm varies by country — check
If you plan overnight stay / stopover in a transit country, also check its regulations. Ferry or car train — there, too, you must check if you can board with a pet.

What to pack from the veterinarian
🚐Before the first trip
Let the dog get used to the vehicle
At home, give him into the motorhome bed and favorite blanket, let him explore and take a nap there in the afternoon. Spend time together in the caravan — show him that it is a part of his home.
Start with a weekend trip before going on a longer holiday trip — the dog will gradually get used to traveling.
🛡Safety during travel
Dog safety during travel is required by law and primarily in your interest. If you use a transport box:
Correct size for the dog. Cozy blanket. Place visible from the driver's seat, protected from direct sunlight and drafts, where heat cannot accumulate.
Special harness in combination with a belt — the dog has a safe place to sit or lie down.
