The White Carpathians and Luhačovice
The spa town of Luhačovice makes a calm base with the White Carpathians within reach — the colonnade, flowering meadows and Vlčnov's wine cellars. Four days are enough to reach the whole of Slovácko and the ridge along the Slovak border from a single pitch, without packing up every evening. In the morning you sip Vincentka at the pavilion at the end of the colonnade, in the afternoon you stand below the highest peak of the White Carpathians and in the evening you are back by the water. May to September is ideal, when the Carpathian meadows are in flower and the campsites by the reservoir are running at full tilt.
From Prague the route runs along the D1 via Brno and Otrokovice, which works out at roughly three and a half hours of driving. You leave the vehicle at the campsite by the Luhačovice reservoir, which stays your base for all four days. The afternoon belongs to the colonnade, to Dušan Jurkovič's timber buildings around Lázeňské náměstí square and to the pavilion of the Vincentka spring at the far end of the colonnade, where the mineral water is tasted straight at the source.
From Luhačovice it is about half an hour's drive to Velká Javořina via Uherský Brod and Strání. You cannot drive all the way up — the last lane from Kamenná búda to the summit is closed to ordinary traffic, so you park below it and walk up a waymarked trail. A television transmitter stands on the summit, a little below it on the Slovak side is the Holubyho chata mountain hut with refreshments, and all around stretches the Javořina national nature reserve with its mountain meadows and old-growth woodland. The approach roads to Strání are narrow and winding, so with a longer vehicle leave yourself room in the bends.
In the morning you head for Vlčnov, where thirty-five wine cellars stand above the village in the Kojiny district — whitewashed buildings with blue trim, thirty of them listed and forming a village heritage reserve since 1995. You can walk freely among them; whether you get a tasting depends on which of the local winemakers you find open. In the afternoon you drive across to Bojkovice and Nový Světlov Castle, built in the English Tudor Gothic style; since 2024 it has no longer been open to the general public, tours are arranged in advance and only for groups (tel. 572 588 099), so without a booking you are left with a walk through the castle park and the surrounding area. On the last weekend of May the Ride of the Kings takes place in Vlčnov — the whole of Slovácko gathers in the village and the quiet green looks nothing like it usually does.
The last morning belongs to the Luhačovice reservoir: a paved loop for walkers, cyclists and skaters runs right around the water, the Duha open-air pool sits by the campsite and boats can be hired on the lake. Motorised craft are not allowed here, so it stays quiet above the surface even in the school holidays. After lunch you head back the same way via Otrokovice and Brno; the return to Prague takes a single afternoon, so you can comfortably set off after midday.
Up to 3.5 t: a Czech electronic motorway vignette is all you need, and you buy it at edalnice.cz or at petrol stations. The 2026 rates are CZK 300 for ten days, CZK 480 for a month and CZK 2,570 for a year; electric and hydrogen vehicles pay nothing. On this route you only need it for the D1 and the D55, as the roads in the White Carpathians are toll-free. Over 3.5 t: the vignette does not apply to this category and you pay electronic toll through an on-board unit, which you have to collect at a toll point before you set off (myto.cz). It is charged by the kilometres driven, the emission class and the number of axles, so the price comes out differently every time. There is no toll road or paid pass anywhere on the route — reaching Velká Javořina or the wine cellars costs nothing. The only admission to budget for is the Duha open-air pool by the campsite and a pre-arranged tour of Nový Světlov Castle.
Autocamping Luhačovice, Pozlovice — right on the shore of the Luhačovice reservoir, fifty pitches with a 10 A hook-up, season roughly from mid-April to the end of September, restaurant and reception on site · Nivnická Riviéra, Nivnice — forty pitches for caravans and thirty electric hook-ups, in the foothills of the White Carpathians a short drive from Uherský Brod · Kemp Starý Hrozenkov, Starý Hrozenkov — pitches for caravans with electricity and water hook-ups, open mainly from June to September, useful for a night in the White Carpathians themselves
Luhačovice has a rule of its own that is worth knowing: between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. the town bans the parking of caravans, motorhomes and trailers, and the municipal police make sure it is respected. During the day you may park in the town car parks according to the usual signs, but the night is spent solely at a campsite, at an authorised pitch or on private land with an agreement. In practice that means arranging a place at a campsite in advance and travelling into the spa centre light — by bike, on foot along the loop around the reservoir or by bus.
The most reliable service point on the whole route is Autocamping Luhačovice in Pozlovice: it has drinking water at the pitches and a disposal point for chemical toilets, so it pays to sort the tanks out here rather than waiting to see what turns up in the hills. The second place with a water connection right at the caravan pitch is Kemp Starý Hrozenkov, but that one runs mainly over the summer. In the White Carpathians themselves, neither on the ridge nor at the car park below Velká Javořina should you expect any service — up there you travel with a tank filled down in the valley.
Adria Compact
The Adria Compact is a low-profile motorhome built around small exterior dimensions, which you will appreciate on the narrow, winding roads to Strání and when parking in a spa town where every space is hard to come by. At the same time there is still room inside for bikes, which come in useful on this route practically every day.
