Roads in Gorenjska are surprisingly gentle for an Alpine region, there are plenty of campsites around Bled and Bohinj, and you can travel between the sights by bus or by bike, so the motorhome can happily stay parked all day. The last two days pull you further east to the Logar Valley, which no longer belongs to the Julian Alps at all, but sits conveniently on the way home. The region is compact enough that the whole programme fits into short drives and you spend most of your time away from the wheel — under the towers of Házmburk, on the summit of Milešovka or on the town square with a glass of local wine. Terezín adds half a day that cannot be rushed: the Small Fortress and the Ghetto Museum are a memorial to the victims of Nazi persecution and they ask for time and silence. The season runs from April to October, when the castles and the chateau are open; by November most of the sites have closed.

The pilgrimage site of Velehrad, Buchlov castle in the Chřiby hills and the Plže cellar lane in Petrov lie close enough to fit into four days. In Slovácko folklore is still lived rather than performed — although the open-air village museum in Strážnice can easily take a whole day. And a motorhome solves the most practical thing of all: after a tasting at the winemaker's you drive nowhere and sleep a short walk from the cellars.

Spiš and Slovenský raj — the castle, Levoča and the gorges

Spišský hrad, Levoča with the world's tallest Gothic altar and gorges fitted with ladders — one campsite covers both Spiš and Slovenský raj. Seven days are set up so that the drive out and the drive back both fit in and five full days are left on the spot: two for the sights listed by UNESCO, two for the gorges and one for the Dobšinská Ice Cave. The gorges may only be walked in one direction, uphill against the stream, so the day is planned around them and not the other way round. Eastern Slovakia is still calmer than the Tatras — the main rush comes in July and August, while in June and September there is room for you at the viewpoints.

The Central Vltava region links Orlík Chateau, Zvíkov Castle and two reservoirs into a three-day loop where you can swim after each tour. Between Slapy and Zvíkov the Vltava has turned into a lake that reaches almost up to the castle walls, and because the stops lie close together, plenty of time is left for the water and the shore. We take the way home past Konopiště so that the last day is not just a drive back.

Seven days across Styria: the Enns gorge in Gesäuse National Park, the world's largest monastery library at Admont and vineyards above Gamlitz. The route holds a single north-to-south axis, so the landscape and the theme change every day — from wild water to baroque halls, from an ore mountain to a UNESCO-listed city and finally into the wine hills above the Slovenian border. Seven days is the minimum that fits in the drive out and back and still leaves time to stay somewhere two nights in a row.

Šumava cannot be covered from a single meadow: the castles near Sušice, the lakes above Železná Ruda and Boubín with Prachatice each lie somewhere else, and that is exactly what a motorhome is built for. Southern Sweden, Gotland and Stockholm in fourteen days: the Österlen coast, Kalmar Castle, the walls of Visby and the Vasa ship. The route starts with a ferry across the Baltic Sea, continues along the coast of Skåne and Blekinge, crosses the Öland Bridge to an island of windmills and from there goes back on board, this time to Gotland. The finale belongs to Stockholm, which works surprisingly well from a motorhome — the vehicle stays at a campsite on the outskirts and the metro takes you into the centre. You return through the Swedish interior to the south coast and board the night ferry back to the continent.

Twelve days in Tuscany: Renaissance Florence, Siena with its Piazza del Campo, and the cypress-lined hills and vineyards of Val d'Orcia. It is a classic that works surprisingly well in a motorhome — two days out, two days back, and a full week in between for the towns, the wineries and the hill country. The campsites around Florence, Pisa, Siena and San Gimignano are used to motorhomes, and most of them sit close enough that you can walk into town or catch a local bus. Spring and early autumn are the best times to come, when the hills are pleasant and the towns are not yet packed.

Four days in the flat pond country between Třeboň and Jindřichův Hradec, where a motorhome parks easily and the bikes come into their own. Your base is Třeboň — a town inside preserved walls, with a chateau, peat spas and a brewery that has been at work since the 14th century. Around it spreads the Třeboňsko protected landscape area with the Rožmberk and Svět ponds, a short drive away stands the Červená Lhota water chateau, and Jindřichův Hradec holds the third largest chateau complex in the country. The route has not a single demanding climb or narrow hairpin, so we are happy to recommend it even for a first longer trip in a motorhome.

Innsbruck, the Zillertal, Achensee and Kufstein sit so close together that you can spend a whole week among Tyrol's valleys with barely any transfers. You set up base at a single campsite, head for the mountains travelling light and sit back under the awning in the evening. One week takes in a fortress above the Inn, a lake in the saddle between two mountain ranges, a glacier reached by cable car and an old town with a bay window of gilded shingles — and running through it all, the same motorway along the Inn from which every valley branches off.

The Soča Valley and Goriška Brda

The emerald Soča links the passes of the Julian Alps with the vineyard hills of Goriška Brda in one long valley you can drive along a single axis. The route starts in the terraced Brda hills at Šmartno, follows the river upstream through Kanal ob Soči, the Tolmin Gorges and Kobarid all the way to Bovec, and comes home over the hairpins of Vršič. It is a trip for anyone who wants to alternate gorges and waterfalls with tastings of rebula and has no appetite for crossing the country every other day. Longer A-class and overcab motorhomes do have hard work ahead of them on Vršič, though, so the itinerary offers a more comfortable way round as well.

Umbria — the green heart of Italy

Umbria pairs stone hilltop towns, the pilgrim city of Assisi and Lake Trasimeno, and it is calmer, cheaper and easier in the heat than Tuscany. The towns lie close together, so you spend most of the day in one place rather than behind the wheel. The route leads through Assisi with the Basilica of St Francis, Perugia, Orvieto on its tufa rock and the Roman-built waterfall Cascata delle Marmore; in the south-west you cross the regional border into Civita di Bagnoregio in Lazio. Spring and early autumn are the most pleasant seasons here, and Lake Trasimeno keeps the programme going on days when the stone paving turns hot.

Valašsko (Wallachia) works from one base: the open-air museum in Rožnov, the ridge walk from Pustevny to Radhošť and the valleys above Velké Karlovice. You park the motorhome down in the valley and then simply move between villages that lie close to one another — the ridges themselves you reach on foot or by cable car. The programme works out at four days including the drive out and back, and it holds up with children too: the timber cottages of the open-air museum and the Radegast statue up on the ridge will win them over more reliably than any castle.

Vienna and Around

You can cover Vienna by motorhome from a single pitch on the edge of the city — the centre is then an easy metro or tram ride away, with no narrow lanes. Five days are enough for imperial Schönbrunn, the historic core with St Stephen's Cathedral, the abbey at Klosterneuburg and the vineyards above the Nussberg with their view over the rooftops. Add two trips beyond the metropolis: to the spa town of Baden, part of the UNESCO Great Spa Towns of Europe since 2021, and to the rebuilt Roman quarter at Carnuntum. The programme works well with children, and everything that matters is open from April to October.

Vorarlberg and Lake Constance

Austria's westernmost corner combines swimming in Lake Constance with the cheese villages of the Bregenzerwald and hairpins up to the Arlberg. Vorarlberg is a small province, so the hops between the lake, the wooded valleys and the mountain cable cars stay short and you spend most of your time in one place rather than behind the wheel. Eight days are enough to cross the region from the water all the way up to Lech and still get home unhurried. It works best from June to September, when the cable cars are running and the higher roads are open.

You cross the High Tatras by motorhome on the Cesta slobody and leave it on foot: Štrbské pleso, Popradské pleso, Lomnický štít and Kežmarok Castle. The programme is arranged so that you spend as little time as possible behind the wheel and as much as possible on your feet. Five days belong to the tarns, the ridges and one cave; the last day before the drive home belongs to the foothills, with Goral architecture and a town castle. Count on the weather in the Tatras turning within an hour, and keep a programme ready for a rainy day as well.

Six days in the Hohe Tauern: the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, the Pasterze glacier, the Krimml Waterfalls and a lakeside base in Zell am See. The rhythm is simple: two transfer days out and back, one big mountain day and three calm ones by the lake — in the Pinzgau valley a single campsite covers the whole stay. Save the mountain day for the morning, because the road closes for the night and carries a toll of its own that belongs in your budget. The safest window for a motorhome is June to September, when the lifts up to the reservoirs above Kaprun are running as well.

Wachau and the Danube Valley

The Wachau is a narrow stretch of the Danube between Melk and Krems, lined with terraced vineyards, apricot orchards and baroque abbeys. The villages lie close together, the roads along both banks are easy to follow and you can put the programme together as the mood takes you — an abbey in the morning, a winemaker's cellar in the afternoon. Four days are enough for an unhurried loop including the journey there and back; if you want tastings and a walk through the vineyards on top of that, add a fifth day. The valley is at its finest when the apricots are in blossom, then in July during the harvest, and again in autumn, when the taverns among the vines open in the wine villages.

The closest Polish seaside to Prague: the cliffs of Wolin National Park, the spa town of Międzyzdroje and the pier at Kołobrzeg. Six days in which two motorway legs, out and back, alternate with short hops along the coast — from Szczecin through the tunnel under the Świna to the island of Usedom, then back to Wolin and further east on the coast road. This is family country: wide sandy beaches, a bison enclosure, lighthouses with viewing galleries and a cliff whose edge you can walk along for a whole afternoon. The season here runs from May to September, but July and August are the busiest — in June or September the promenades and viewpoints are noticeably emptier.

Châteaux of the Loire and Versailles — the valley of kings

Chambord, Amboise, Chenonceau and Villandry sit so close along the Loire that you rarely drive more than half an hour a day. The rest of the day belongs to the gardens, to the cycle paths along the river and to dinner with goat cheese and a glass of white wine. Twelve days leave room for an unhurried drive out and back, and for Versailles on the way home — it is too far from the Loire valley for a day trip, but as the closing chapter of the journey it fits exactly.
