Pálava and the Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape

Four days between the limestone crags of Pálava and the castles of the Lednice-Valtice landscape, each barely half an hour from the next. Mikulov Castle, the ruins of Dívčí hrady above Pavlov, Lednice with its minaret and Valtice sit in a triangle that a motorhome covers without a single serious climb. Along the way you can swim in the upper Nové Mlýny reservoir at Pasohlávky, ride the cycle trails between the vineyards and end the day in a wine cellar. The main season runs from May to September; in April and October the castles tend to open mainly at weekends, so check your tour date in advance.

Itinerary
Day 1Arrival in Mikulov and the castle above the town

From Prague you drive to Mikulov by motorway via Brno, so leaving in the morning still leaves the whole afternoon for the town. The first stop is Mikulov Castle, with the regional museum's exhibitions and a giant wine barrel down in the cellar; from the terrace you can see Svatý kopeček and the Pálava ridge. Keep the early evening for a stroll around the square and the climb up to Kozí hrádek, from where the whole town lies at your feet.

Day 2Děvičky above Pavlov and swimming in the Nové Mlýny reservoirs

The ruins of Dívčí hrady, commonly called Děvičky, are reached on foot from Pavlov — your motorhome stays in the village car park and a short but genuinely steep climb leads to the top. The reward is a view over all three Nové Mlýny reservoirs and the vineyards below the ridge. In the afternoon it is worth dropping down to the water at Pasohlávky on the upper reservoir, where the sandy-grassy beaches shelve gently and water-sports rentals open in summer; the middle Věstonice reservoir, by contrast, is a bird reserve where swimming and access to the water surface are prohibited.

Day 3Lednice: castle, park and minaret

Lednice Castle deserves a full morning — besides the guided tours there is a greenhouse of tropical plants and a vast castle park. In the afternoon you can set off on foot or by bike to the minaret and to Janohrad; in high season a boat trip along the Dyje usually runs as well. With a motorhome, count on the overflow car park by the castle and continue into the grounds on foot.

Day 4Valtice, wine for the road and the journey home

The last day belongs to Valtice. In the castle cellar you will find the Salon vín České republiky, the national wine salon, and above the town stands the Reistna colonnade with views across the border into Austria. You can choose wine to take home straight from a winemaker or in the Valtické podzemí cellars, and then head back to Prague the same way via Brno.

Practical motorhome information
🛂 Tolls and vignettes

Up to 3.5 t (most motorhomes) the Czech electronic motorway vignette applies, and you buy it in the official e-shop at edalnice.gov.cz. Under the price list valid from 1 January 2026, a ten-day vignette for standard fuel costs roughly CZK 300, a thirty-day one about CZK 480 and an annual one around CZK 2,570; rates are lower for CNG, biomethane and plug-in hybrids. You need the vignette right from the start of the drive out of Prague — the route uses the D1 and the D52 towards Mikulov, both of them tolled sections. Above 3.5 t the vignette does not apply: the vehicle falls under the performance-based Mýto CZ electronic toll, needs an on-board unit and registration before you set off, and the toll is calculated from the distance driven, the emission class and the number of axles. The Mikulov — Pálava — Lednice — Valtice loop itself runs on second- and third-class roads, where you pay nothing; the overflow car parks at the castles, however, are chargeable.

⛺ Campsites and stopovers

Camping Mikulov, Mikulov — seventy pitches with an electric hook-up, showers and a kitchenette, a short walk from the centre; they take no reservations and the season starts as early as March · Autokemp Merkur, Pasohlávky — a large fenced site with two lagoons on the shore of the upper Nové Mlýny reservoir; the ATC I and ATC II sections have pitches with an electric hook-up · Autokemp Apollo, Břeclav (U Apolla) — pitches for caravans and motorhomes with an electric hook-up, open roughly from April to November; a good base for both Lednice and Valtice

🌙 Overnight parking

For motorhomes the most comfortable choice is the Stellplatz Pálava stopover in Dolní Dunajovice: twelve self-service pitches in a fenced compound, open around the clock and, in the 2026 season, from the end of February to the middle of November, so you can arrive late in the evening as well. Free overnighting outside designated places is prohibited in the Pálava Protected Landscape Area and in the woods of the Lednice-Valtice landscape alike, so allow for that when planning each evening. And one trap: the campsite in Klentnice is a tents-only site in a former quarry with motor vehicles banned — you will not get a motorhome in there, so do not plan it as a place to sleep.

🚰 Water and servicing

The most practical service stop directly on the route is Camping Mikulov — its list of facilities includes fresh water, a waste-water drain and a place to empty a chemical toilet, and because it lies a short walk from the centre of Mikulov, you can combine the service stop with a visit to the castle. If you are heading for the water instead, fill the tank on arrival at a hook-up pitch in Autokemp Merkur in Pasohlávky. A public disposal point is not something you can count on in Mikulov, Lednice or Valtice, so plan emptying for a campsite or for the stopover in Dolní Dunajovice.

Adria Coral

The Coral is a semi-integrated motorhome with a rear garage that takes bikes — and bikes are the best way to travel between Mikulov, Lednice and Valtice, because flat cycle trails through the vineyards link the whole area together. It is also a roomy semi-integrated vehicle you can live in comfortably for all four days, even when the South Moravian weather turns and the day moves indoors.
