The High Tatras and Kežmarok — tarns, peaks and foothills

You cross the High Tatras by motorhome on the Cesta slobody and leave it on foot: Štrbské pleso, Popradské pleso, Lomnický štít and Kežmarok Castle. The programme is arranged so that you spend as little time as possible behind the wheel and as much as possible on your feet. Five days belong to the tarns, the ridges and one cave; the last day before the drive home belongs to the foothills, with Goral architecture and a town castle. Count on the weather in the Tatras turning within an hour, and keep a programme ready for a rainy day as well.

Itinerary
Day 1The drive to the foot of the Tatras

Set off early in the morning; the journey via Brno, Žilina and Poprad takes practically the whole day. Check in at a campsite in the foothills in the afternoon and keep the evening for nothing more than a short walk and a first look at the ridge. Do the bigger shop on the way, in Poprad — the shops in the Tatra settlements are small.

Day 2Štrbské pleso and the highest settlement in Slovakia

Štrbské pleso lies at an altitude of 1,346 metres and the settlement beside it is the highest in Slovakia. An easy path runs around the water with views of Solisko and Patria, and the ski-jumping complex stands above the village. The car park at the tarn is small and charged, so it is more comfortable to leave the vehicle at the campsite and come by the Tatra electric railway — it runs from Poprad via Starý Smokovec to Štrbské Pleso, with a branch from the Križovatka stop in Starý Smokovec to Tatranská Lomnica.

Day 3Popradské pleso and the Symbolický cintorín

Popradské pleso at an altitude of 1,494 metres can only be reached on foot — cars and motorhomes are not allowed anywhere near it, and the only surfaced road leading there is for walkers. From Štrbské Pleso along the Tatranská magistrála trail it means an hour to an hour and a half of walking; from the Popradské Pleso stop the surfaced track climbs steadily. Above the tarn stands the Symbolický cintorín, a quiet grove with a cairn and wooden crosses commemorating those who died in the mountains. You can return the same way, or carry on past the mountain hut deeper into the Mengusovská dolina valley.

Day 4Hrebienok and the waterfalls of the Studený potok

The funicular from Starý Smokovec has been running up to Hrebienok since 1908 and takes you to an altitude of 1,285 metres without a single uphill step. From there a marked path leads to the waterfalls of the Studený potok, where the water forces its way over granite steps — a pleasant option for a day when yesterday's hike is still in your legs. Anyone wanting more follows the waymarks into the Malá or Veľká Studená dolina valleys.

Day 5Lomnický štít and Skalnaté pleso

From Tatranská Lomnica a cable car runs up to Lomnický štít (2,634 metres), with a change at Skalnaté pleso; the lower section up to Skalnaté pleso has been carrying passengers since 1937. The ticket for the upper section is tied to a specific time slot and has to be bought online in advance — you will not get one from the self-service machine — and time on the summit terrace is limited to 50 minutes. In strong wind or a thunderstorm the upper section does not run, so keep the TANAP Museum or the Exhibition of Tatra Nature in reserve; both are right in Tatranská Lomnica.

Day 6Belianska jaskyňa, Ždiar and Kežmarok

Belianska jaskyňa in Tatranská Kotlina is the only cave open to the public in the High Tatras: the tour lasts around 70 minutes, there are 874 steps and the temperature is about six degrees, so a jacket comes in handy even in August. Tickets are neither reserved nor sold in advance; they go on sale on the spot shortly before entry, and you can only go in with a guide. Further along the way, stop in Ždiar, a Goral village below the Belianske Tatry, where whole ensembles of folk architecture have been protected since 1977. The afternoon belongs to Kežmarok — the Gothic town castle with its museum and the wooden articular church of 1717, on the UNESCO list since 2008.

Day 7The journey home

The last day is given over entirely to the drive back, via Poprad onto the D1 and on towards Žilina and Brno. Set off early so that you have room for calm breaks; on the descent from the Tatra settlements into the Poprad basin, save your brakes by changing down. If you have an hour to spare, Spišská Sobota in Poprad is worth a stop — an urban conservation area with the church of St George and the altar by Master Paul of Levoča.

Practical motorhome information
🛂 Tolls and vignettes

Slovak motorways are covered by an electronic vignette. Up to 3.5 t, a one-day vignette costs 8.10 €, a ten-day one 10.80 €, a thirty-day one 17.10 € and an annual one 90 € (eznamka.sk). Above 3.5 t what decides is the category in the registration document: two-track vehicles of category M1, which is where most motorhomes belong, pay the vignette regardless of weight; vehicles over 3.5 t outside M1 fall under electronic tolling at emyto.sk and need an on-board unit. Add to your budget the paid attractions the trip is built on: the Tatranská Lomnica – Skalnaté pleso – Lomnický štít cable car (buy online at gopass.travel), admission to Belianska jaskyňa (adults 15 €, children aged 4–15 8 €) and parking in the Tatranská Lomnica resort — the first 15 minutes free, then 2 € up to an hour, 4 € up to two hours, 6 € up to four hours, 10 € up to twelve hours, 20 € for a full day and 40 € for every further 24 hours.

⛺ Campsites and stopovers

Leharo Camping, Stará Lesná — open all year, every pitch has its own 16 A hook-up with a meter and drinking water, and some pitches also have a sewer connection · RIJO Camping Vysoké Tatry, Stará Lesná — a seasonal campsite a short way from Tatranská Lomnica, with 220 V hook-ups, showers, toilets and a shared kitchen · Autocamping Tatranská Štrba, Tatranská Štrba — the nearest campsite for the first days at Štrbské Pleso, fenced and camera-monitored, with electrical hook-ups, a fully equipped shared kitchen and token-operated showers; reception 8:00–21:00

🌙 Overnight parking

The High Tatras are a national park: wild camping and sleeping in car parks are prohibited within TANAP, and you may spend the night only at campsites. In high season it pays to reach the campsite by around midday at the latest — the pitches that take a longer vehicle are the first to go. Arrange a booking at the year-round campsite in advance by e-mail or telephone; these are small, family-run places.

🚰 Water and servicing

Plan filling up and emptying directly at the campsite. Leharo Camping in Stará Lesná has drinking water on every pitch and several pitches with a direct sewer connection, so the service can be done without moving the vehicle; RIJO Camping offers showers, toilets and a kitchen. Set off onto the Cesta slobody with a full fresh-water tank and an empty waste tank — a full day at Popradské pleso or Skalnaté pleso means you will not be back at the vehicle until the evening.

Adria Compact

The Adria Compact is a semi-integrated motorhome 2,120 mm wide and 2,750 mm tall — a narrow, low body that suits the mountain roads below the Tatras and the tight parking bays in the Tatra settlements. The organised storage spread through the vehicle takes rucksacks, poles and wet boots after a week of walking, and you will appreciate the heating at the morning temperatures found above a thousand metres.
