Spiš and Slovenský raj — the castle, Levoča and the gorges

Spišský hrad, Levoča with the world's tallest Gothic altar and gorges fitted with ladders — one campsite covers both Spiš and Slovenský raj. Seven days are set up so that the drive out and the drive back both fit in and five full days are left on the spot: two for the sights listed by UNESCO, two for the gorges and one for the Dobšinská Ice Cave. The gorges may only be walked in one direction, uphill against the stream, so the day is planned around them and not the other way round. Eastern Slovakia is still calmer than the Tatras — the main rush comes in July and August, while in June and September there is room for you at the viewpoints.

Itinerary
Day 1Driving out to Spiš

The fastest route from Prague runs along the D1 to Brno and Olomouc, then past Ostrava to the border at Český Těšín and on along the Slovak motorway through Žilina and Poprad. It is a full day behind the wheel, so do not plan anything else for the first day. Settle into a campsite below Slovenský raj or below the Tatras in the afternoon and leave the evening for a first look around.

Day 2Spišský hrad and Spišská Kapitula

The castle complex above Spišské Podhradie spreads across a limestone hill and ranks among the largest in Central Europe. You walk up to the gates and there is no shade on the hill, so set off in the morning and take water and hats with you. The upper castle is closed for reconstruction, so check in advance how much of the site the tour covers. The afternoon belongs to Spišská Kapitula, a fortified ecclesiastical town with the Cathedral of St Martin, which is listed by UNESCO together with the castle and the Church of the Holy Spirit in Žehra.

Day 3Levoča and the altar of Majster Pavol

The historic centre of Levoča lies entirely inside the walls and Majstra Pavla Square is made for a slow walk. The Basilica of St James holds the main altar carved by Majster Pavol between 1508 and 1517, over eighteen metres high and considered the tallest late Gothic altarpiece in the world. The church can only be entered during tour times, so allow for that when you plan the morning. The rest of the afternoon goes to the historic town hall, the cage of shame on the square and the lanes around it.

Day 4Suchá Belá and Tomášovský výhľad

The most visited gorge in Slovenský raj starts at Podlesok and climbs past waterfalls on ladders, footholds and chains; the passage takes roughly two hours and leads strictly upwards, with the descent following a marked path outside the gorge. It asks for stamina rather than technique, but with small children, or without any appetite for climbing on iron, choose Tomášovský výhľad instead. That is a rocky spur above the Hornád valley, reached by an ordinary footpath with no fixed ropes, and the view is every bit as generous as from the gorge. Take shoes with a firm sole into the gorge and leave dry clothes in the vehicle — it is cold and wet between the walls even in August.

Day 5Prielom Hornádu and Kláštorisko

The Chodník Horskej služby leads through the Hornád canyon: wooden walkways and footholds right above the water, a tight canyon floor and walls up to a hundred and fifty metres high. You can shorten the route by climbing to Kláštorisko, the ruin of a Carthusian monastery in the middle of the forest with a chalet and refreshments. Which gorges and sections are open at any given time is announced by the national park administration — individual routes close for maintenance of the fixed aids and after heavy rain.

Day 6Dobšinská Ice Cave and Dedinky

From the car park below the cave the path climbs steeply through the forest and it is a proper haul, so allow yourself some extra time. Inside it stays below freezing even in summer, so a jacket, a hat and shoes that do not slip are no exaggeration; the circuit past the frozen falls and ice columns takes about half an hour. The cave only operates in the summer season, roughly from mid May to mid September, Mondays are closed and entry times are fixed. On the way back you can stop at the Palcmanská Maša reservoir in Dedinky; access to the water is free, but you swim at your own risk and the water stays cold even in summer.

Day 7The way home

The return follows the same route through Poprad, Žilina and the Ostrava region and it is a long stage for a single day. Set off early in the morning, share the driving and plan one longer break around the halfway point. Empty and refill the tanks at the campsite before you leave, so that you do not have to stop anywhere along the way.

Practical motorhome information
🛂 Tolls and vignettes

Up to 3.5 t: Slovak motorways and expressways require an electronic vignette. It is bought against the registration plate at eznamka.sk or in the mobile app; there is no sticker for the windscreen. The price list is 8.10 € for one day, 10.80 € for ten days, 17.10 € for thirty days and 90 € for a year. With a combination up to 3.5 t of total weight only the towing vehicle pays the vignette; as soon as the combination exceeds 3.5 t, both the vehicle and the trailer need one. Over 3.5 t: the vignette does not apply and the vehicle falls under the electronic toll at emyto.sk — you have to register, collect an on-board unit at a contact or distribution point (there are some near the borders) and pay according to the sections you drive. There is no toll mountain road and no separately charged tunnel on this route. Do count, however, on the admission to the Dobšinská Ice Cave, 14 € for adults and 7 € for children from 4 to 15, on the gorge admission collected by the municipalities (4 € per adult for Suchá Belá, 3 € for the other gorges; anyone staying in Hrabušice who pays the local accommodation tax there no longer pays the gorge admission), and on parking fees at the national park entrances. In the Czech Republic the ordinary Czech electronic vignette applies up to 3.5 t.

⛺ Campsites and stopovers

Autocamping Podlesok, Hrabušice — right at the entrance to Slovenský raj and at the start of the Suchá Belá gorge, open roughly from April to October, hundreds of pitches for motorhomes and caravans, electric hook-ups. · Rijo Camping, Stará Lesná — below the High Tatras at an altitude of around eight hundred metres, season from May to September, terraced pitches with a view of the ridge; it suits both the first and the last night of the trip. · Autocamp Čingov, Smižany — right at the Čingov entrance to Slovenský raj, the starting point for both Prielom Hornádu and Tomášovský výhľad; season roughly from May to October, 26 pitches with electric hook-ups, sanitary facilities and the hotel restaurant right next door.

🌙 Overnight parking

You sleep at a campsite — wild camping is not allowed in the national park and overnighting in the vehicle outside designated places is not tolerated. During the day leave the vehicle in the official car parks at the park entrances, that is at Podlesok, Čingov or in Dedinky; a parking fee is charged there and in high season they fill up by mid morning, so set off early. The historic centres of Levoča and Spišské Podhradie are narrow, so with a longer vehicle stop at the edge and walk in.

🚰 Water and servicing

Take on drinking water and empty the tanks at Autocamping Podlesok in Hrabušice — it sits right at the park entrance and is open roughly from April to October; ask at reception (+421 53 429 91 65) exactly where the service point is. Outside its season, or on the way back through Poprad, Rijo Camping in Stará Lesná will do the job, open from May to September. After a day in the gorges expect to use more water for showering, so top the tank up every evening rather than waiting for it to run out.

Adria Coral XL

A week in one place with daily trips into the gorges means a pile of wet and muddy gear — the Coral XL has a large garage for rucksacks, boots and poles, and thanks to the bunk beds the family gets a corner of its own. On the long motorway run to Poprad and on the daily hops between Podlesok, Levoča and Dobšiná it drives calmly and without any compromises in the living area.
