Grossglockner and Zell am See
The Grossglockner High Alpine Road and the spa town of Zell am See above its lake in Salzburg's Pinzgau region are among the most beautiful corners of the Austrian Alps. It is only just over four hundred kilometres from the Příbram branch, so you can set off for four days of mountain panoramas without a long approach journey.
After a relaxed drive from the Příbram branch, arrive in the spa town of Zell am See, the administrative centre of the district of the same name in Salzburg. Wild camping is generally prohibited in Austria and is monitored especially strictly in the mountains, but there are plenty of motorhome stopovers. Seecamp by the lake, with water, electricity and showers, is an excellent place to start.
Devote the second day to the peaceful surroundings of Lake Zell in the area colloquially known as Pinzgau. Sportcamp Woferlgut or Campingplatz Glemmerhof provide comfortable facilities. In Austria, vehicles over 3.5 tonnes use a GO-Box instead of a motorway vignette, with tolls charged according to the kilometres driven.
The third day belongs to Grossglockner itself and its hairpin bends climbing high above the valley. After the demanding mountain drive, a comfortable base such as Panorama Camp, with waste disposal, water, electricity and showers, is worthwhile. Remember that wild camping is monitored particularly strictly in the mountains, so the motorhome must always spend the night in a permitted place.
On the final day, enjoy a morning view of the mountains and slowly make your way home. Before leaving, refill your water and empty the tanks at one of the fully equipped campsites. The short distance to the Příbram branch allows for a relaxed return in a single day.
Vehicles over 3.5 t use a GO-Box instead of a vignette, with tolls charged per kilometre.
