Norwegian Fjords
Norway's fjords are among the most dramatic corners of Europe, and the port city of Kristiansand, the administrative centre of Agder county, is often their southern gateway. It is more than 1,700 kilometres from the Brandýs branch, so this four-day journey into the Nordic wilderness is a major but unforgettable adventure.
The first day is devoted to the long drive from the Brandýs branch towards the Scandinavian coast. Norway has allemansrett, which allows camping in the wild, but overnight motorhome stays on roads are restricted to car parks and you must always keep your distance from homes. Kongsgård, with a waste-disposal point and electricity, makes a peaceful base.
On the second day, steep rock walls dropping straight into the sea and winding roads along the water open up before you. When looking for somewhere to spend the night, remember that under Norwegian rules a motorhome should be parked in designated car parks, not just anywhere. Roligheden makes a good base, with easy access farther along the coast.
On the third day, drive deeper among the fjords and enjoy a slower pace with frequent stops at viewpoints. You can make the most of the open countryside, but keep your vehicle away from homes and park only where permitted. A local campsite will do for the night, where you can regain your strength before the return journey.
On the final day, head south again via Kristiansand in Agder. Before the long journey home, refill your water and empty the tanks at a location with a waste-disposal point. In Norway, expect a higher toll rate for heavier vehicles so the bill does not surprise you on the road.
A higher rate applies.
